Business Continuity – Disaster Recovery (DR)

How important is your computer system to the operations of your business? Can your business survive without access to the data on your computers and servers? If your computer system is down, can you survive for 3 hours, 3 days or maybe more? In today’s business environment most companies will find it hard to lose their computer system for more than 1 hour.

That is because businesses are relying more and more on their computer systems, the cost of loss in productivity and opportunity loss could add up to thousands of dollars per hour.

Cloud Apps such as Office 365

Most businesses are now using the cloud in one way or another. BUT how many are backing up their data that is stored in the cloud. Microsoft Office 365 users for example may think that their data is backed up by Microsoft but it’s not. Microsoft may put a SLA on availability of your data but not on recoverability of your data. These are two very different things. What does that mean?

Here is an example: You have been working on a progressive spreadsheet for the last few years. Every month you add and change cells and you save it as SalesForecast.xlsx . You or someone comes along and saves another spreadsheet with the same name into the same folder. Microsoft will ensure that you will be able to open this file and will even replicate this file to a second server, but the contents will be the last saved copy, you can not restore back to the previous versions or a version from a few days ago. With a backup system in place you will be able to restore your file to any backups you have made.

Two important factors to consider with your DR:

Recovery Point Objectives

The RPO is the point in time where the system can be restored with minimal acceptable loss of data to the business.

For example, Can the business afford to restore back to last night’s backup?. If so, it means that you would be required to re-process all data that was processed since then. This would usually put you back on average, 2 days work.

In today’s environment, this is unacceptable for most businesses. DR Solutions available today can minimise loss of data by providing continual data protection.

Recovery Time Objectives

In Simple terms RTO is the maximum time the system can be down before affecting the business.

What is the cost to your business if your system is unavailable?
